As you know, safety is at the heart of everything I do in my business, and especially when photographing young children and babies; I’ve posted a number of times about safe handling and photographic techniques I use for newborn photoshoots.

This month, I decided to take things a step further and update my first aid knowledge, so I attended a Mini First Aid class. These classes are designed with new parents and grandparents in mind and are focussed on first aid techniques for children – which are often a bit different to the way you would treat an adult.

Specifically, the class covered the basics of first aid, including what you should have in a first aid kit and how to use it and then went on to cover such emergencies as choking, CPR, dealing with burns, breaks, bumps and bleeding, febrile seizures, and meningitis awareness

The class was a real eye opener for me, especially as some of the medical advice has been updated since my daughter was a baby. Being able to practice CPR on a specially designed mannequin baby was extremely useful – you really have no idea how hard chest compressions have to be until you try!

I hope I will never need to use any of my learning, but now I feel confident that, should the worst happen, I will know what to do.
