If you’ve got little ones, you’ll know that Halloween in the UK has really stepped up its game over the last few years. What was once a quiet night with maybe one or two trick-or-treaters is now a full-on event with pumpkin trails, spooky discos, and sweet buckets overflowing with goodies. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-sugar, but sometimes it feels like October is just one long sugar rush followed by a crash.
So if you’re like me and want to sprinkle in some healthier options amongst the Haribos, I’ve rounded up some fun ideas for treats and snacks for spooky season.
Pumpkin Hummus Pots
Not feeling super creative? Kids actually do eat hummus if you make it fun. Scoop a dollop into a small pot and draw a little pumpkin face on the outside with a Sharpie. Pair it with carrot sticks, cucumber slices, or breadsticks. A super simple healthy festive treat on the snack table!
Witches’ Broomsticks
Grab some pretzel sticks and stick a chunk of cheese (cut into a broom shape if you’re fancy) on the end. Tie a tiny strip of chive around the cheese for the full broom effect. Perfect for little hands to grab and munch.

Banana Ghosts & Clementine Pumpkins
This one’s practically a Pinterest classic, but for good reason. Half a banana, a couple of chocolate chips for eyes (dark choc if you’re keeping it healthier), and suddenly you’ve got a ghost.
Peel a clementine, pop a little bit of celery stick in the top and voilà, a mini pumpkin. They’re cute, fast, and the kids will definitely nibble them.
Monster Apple Bites
These are ridiculously easy and always get giggles. Slice up a green apple, spread a little peanut butter (or almond butter if that’s more your thing) between two slices, then pop in a row of sunflower seeds for teeth and a strawberry slice for a tongue. If you’re feeling extra, add edible eyes (you can get them in most supermarkets now). Suddenly, it’s not just a snack—it’s a spooky little creature.
Spooky Sandwiches
An open sandwich is an easy spooky lunchtime or party snack.
Finely slice some cheese into strips, criss cross across the bread and add a couple of slices of olive to create a mummy.

Get creative and make your own monster (get the kids to help!)
A cucumber slice with half an olive or grape or a blueberry makes a brilliant monster eye, try shredded lettuce or cabbage for hair, strawberry slices are great tongues, sunflower seeds for teeth.
How about soft cheese ghosts with raisin eyes?
A Quick Word on Balance
Halloween is magical because it’s a bit over the top. I’m not suggesting you replace every Haribo fang with a celery stick (no one wants that). But mixing in some of these options at your Halloween party makes the whole night feel a little less… hyper. Plus, the photos of your kids with a banana ghost and enjoying their pretzel broomstick? Priceless.
And speaking of photos, if you’re thinking about updating your family photos before Christmas (yes, it’s almost here), let’s chat!
Happy Halloween and happy snacking!
